Almost half a decade after gaining independence, Kenya still grapples with death pangs caused by hunger. It is such a national shame to see a country crippled by drought and famine to such a level. It is such a shame to see innocent children crumble to hunger pain and pregnant women breathe their last. If this is what it means to be independent, someone take me a slave!
The government of Kenya has betrayed its people. With the warnings of looming drought and famine, what did the government do? Nothing! Absolutely nothing. It did not buy livestock from the poor pastoralists in the drought-prone areas. It did not buy maize that is rotting in the farms of the poor peasants. The government behaved as if nothing was amiss. It did not buy maize from other countries to boost its national reserve. What happened to new technology and all the pride of a winning nation?
Lo, and behold, a cry rises to the heavens, a cry from the stomachs of innocent children, pregnant women and helpless men who watch as their family members lose their lives to hunger. One day, someone will pay for the innocent deaths. I pray it is not someone i know because it will be so devastating a scene. For God is the keeper of the helpless.
